This week I had a chance to redo a hutch. I got it on CL for little money!! Had some deliver it right to the house and he unloaded it before I even got to the shop. How he did it all on his own IDK! It is heavy!!When I first saw it I was a little scared not gonna lie! It was 70′s hutch even had orange veins in the glass. I wasn’t sure if the orange paper on the back had come originally on it or if someone had a moment of inspiration?? Not sure what inspired them but it was awful! Oh I almost forgot the faux wood laminate on bottom half!
I pondered it for a while what to do with it?? I decided to first take out the hideous glass which really wasn’t even real glass! Then I decided I would have to cover that wallpaper somehow…. I had thought of beadboard but that would be added expense. Hubby said he had some cedar siding left from a project I could use. Brilliant I thought. I told him coyly I will think about it. Never let them know you like an idea they have! So I went about putting the siding in the back of the hutch. Now please give me some leeway as I have never hung siding in my life! I did my best. I guess lesson learned use a guide of some sort so you get them equally space. They weren’t horrible but hubby said uh, little off. I said, it’s part of the rustic look. He just shook his head.
After the siding was up I primed the whole piece even the laminate top! I scuffed it really good first then used an oil based primer on it. Then I used MMS Luckett green only on the siding part. Painted the rest in old white ASCP. I shabbied it all up waxed til I thought my arms would fall off.Added chicken wire where the pretend glass was and added green glass knobs.
I’m very pleased with how it turned out! Darn that the fact I live in such a small house! I would drag that puppy in so fast!
