Old Door put to good use

I recently had a chance to do something I have wanted to do for quite a while. I took an old door and turned it into a headboard.Finding an old door is super easy around here! Hubs and my father in law are contractors so they know they had better bring home all old doors and windows or anything interesting I might be able to use!
So I told hubs I had a lady who wanted a headboard mad with an old door and would he pretty please help me figure it out? He said yes! well we set about it picked the perfect door from my stash. Then purchased a decorative trim piece for the top and two 2 by 6 pieces of lumber.
We decided to attach the 2 by 6 lumber to the sides based on the width we needed it to be. In this case it was for a full size bed so we made it 55″ wide.

So you can see we cut into the boards on  the sides and left them on bottom half for legs to bolt into the bed frame. addedheadboard build2

We also added the decorative trim piece to the top.

Then I did a bit of sanding and painted it in ASCP the color Aubusson Blue. I waxed it with ASCP dark wax to tone down the blue a little bit.

headboardI shabbied it just a bit to age it more.

I decided to leave the decorative plate that was behind the knob. I couldn’t leave the knob cause it was missing besides I figured if they were anything like me I would hit my head on it!

headboard1See isn’t it purdy?? I really love the way it came out! I might just have to build one for my bed! Hope you are all having a fabulous weekend! Traci

  1. Fantastic! What a creative use of an old door. I wish I have some doors lying around – I could make a frame for a day bed…Very inspiring post.
